Overview of the Lemosho route

The 6-day Machame Route is a shorter version of one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic trails. The route begins in the rainforest at Machame Gate, rises to Shira Camp, continues through Lava Tower and Barranco, crosses the famous Barranco Wall, then goes directly from Barranco through Karanga Valley to Barafu Camp for the summit attempt. This 8-day tour includes arrival and departure days, giving clients a complete Kilimanjaro climb with Guruguru Safaris in a compact schedule.

Who Should Choose the 6-Day Machame Trek?

The 6-day Machame trek is best for strong hikers, fit travelers, and climbers with previous trekking experience. It is not the most comfortable choice for beginners because it skips the overnight stay at Karanga Camp and gives the body less time to acclimatize before summit night.

Guruguru Safaris should position this version as a faster and more demanding Machame option. Travelers who want a better acclimatization profile should choose the 7-day Machame route instead.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport - Transfer to Hotel

On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be welcomed by a Guruguru Safaris representative and transferred to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. The rest of the day is reserved for rest after your flight, gear organization, and preparation before the climb.

In the evening, your mountain guide will conduct a detailed briefing. The briefing covers the route plan, altitude safety, daily trekking pace, packing check, weather expectations, tipping guidance, and how the Guruguru Safaris mountain crew will support you during the expedition.

Day 2

Hotel - Machame Gate - Machame Camp

After breakfast, your guide and mountain crew will meet you at the hotel for a final equipment check before driving to Machame Gate. At the gate, the team completes park registration, permit checks, and porter luggage weighing before the trek begins.

The first trekking day passes through thick rainforest, where the trail can be damp and muddy, especially during the rainy season. The pace should remain slow and steady from the start, allowing your body to adjust to the mountain gradually.

You arrive at Machame Camp in the late afternoon. Your Guruguru Safaris crew will prepare camp, dinner, and drinking water while your guide checks how everyone is feeling after the first day on the mountain.

Day 3

Machame Camp - Shira Camp - Acclimatization Hike

After breakfast, the trail leaves the rainforest and climbs toward the moorland zone. As you gain altitude, the vegetation becomes shorter and the views begin to open toward the Shira Plateau.

The day is not very long in distance, but the altitude change is important. Your guide will control the pace carefully, encouraging slow walking, regular water breaks, and early communication if anyone feels symptoms of altitude discomfort.

After reaching Shira Camp, you will rest, have lunch, and later complete a short acclimatization walk toward the Lava Tower direction before returning to camp for dinner. This supports the climb-high, sleep-low principle.

Acclimatization hike:

Day 4

Shira Camp - Lava Tower - Barranco Camp

Today is one of the most important acclimatization days of the Machame Route. The trail rises toward Lava Tower, a volcanic landmark at high altitude, where many climbers begin to feel the thinner air more clearly.

Although the day can feel demanding, it is valuable for acclimatization because you gain altitude during the day and then descend to sleep lower at Barranco Camp. Lunch is usually taken around the Lava Tower area before the descent begins.

Barranco Camp sits below the famous Barranco Wall. The wall can look steep from camp, but it follows a normal hiking route and does not require technical climbing.

Hiking time:

Day 5

Barranco Camp - Barranco Wall - Karanga Valley - Barafu Camp

The day begins with the climb up Barranco Wall, one of the most memorable sections of the Machame Route. It is not technical, but it requires patience, balance, and careful foot placement in a few short places.

After the wall, the trail crosses ridges and valleys toward Karanga. On the 6-day Machame schedule, the group does not sleep at Karanga Camp. Instead, you continue onward to Barafu Camp, which makes this day long and physically demanding.

When you arrive at Barafu Camp, the priority is rest. Your crew will prepare an early dinner while you organize warm layers, headlamp, water, snacks, and summit gear for the midnight climb.

Approx. 11 km

Hiking time:

8-10 hours

Meal Plan

Barafu Camp

Day 6

Barafu Camp - Uhuru Peak - Millennium Camp

Around midnight, the summit attempt begins. The route climbs slowly toward Stella Point and then Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. This is the most difficult part of the climb because of cold temperatures, darkness, fatigue, and high altitude.

Guruguru Safaris guides will keep the pace controlled and monitor each climber closely. After reaching Uhuru Peak, you will take photos and celebrate briefly before descending to Barafu Camp for rest and refreshments.

The descent continues to Millennium Camp, where the lower altitude brings relief after the long summit day. Careful footing is important because many climbers are tired after reaching the top.

Acclimatization hike:

Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m

Hiking distance:

Approx. 15 km

Hiking time:

8-12 hours

Meal Plan

Light midnight snack, breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Day 7

Millennium Camp - Mweka Gate - Transfer to Hotel

After breakfast, the final descent follows the Mweka trail through the rainforest. The air becomes warmer and thicker as you lose altitude, and the trail gradually returns to the green lower slopes of Kilimanjaro.

At Mweka Gate, you complete park exit formalities. Successful climbers receive Kilimanjaro certificates before saying thank you to the guides, cook, and porters who supported the expedition.

A Guruguru Safaris vehicle will transfer you back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. The rest of the day is for a hot shower, rest, and celebration.

Optional Extensions with Guruguru Safaris

After Kilimanjaro, many travelers add a private Tanzania safari or Zanzibar beach holiday. Popular combinations include a 3-day Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara safari; a Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari; or a Zanzibar beach extension for rest after the mountain.

  • The Marangu Route is known as the Coca-Cola Route and is the classic Kilimanjaro hut route, but it is still a serious high-altitude climb.
  • The route uses mountain huts instead of camping tents, which makes it attractive for climbers who prefer basic indoor accommodation on the mountain.
  • Walk slowly from the first day. A controlled pace is one of the best ways to protect acclimatization.
  • Drink water frequently and tell your guide early if you feel headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue, or breathing difficulty.
  • Pack warm layers for summit night, including thermal base layers, insulated jacket, gloves, warm hat, and headlamp with spare batteries.
  • Consult your doctor before travel if you plan to use altitude medication or if you have any medical condition.
  • The descent after summit is long. Careful foot placement is important when climbers are tired.
  • Waterproof hiking boots that are already broken in before travel.
  • Thermal base layers, fleece layer, insulated jacket, waterproof jacket, and waterproof trousers.
  • Warm gloves, liner gloves, warm hat, sun hat, neck gaiter, and sunglasses.
  • Sleeping bag suitable for cold mountain nights, unless rented through Guruguru Safaris.
  • Headlamp with spare batteries for summit night.
  • Daypack, water bottles or hydration bladder, trekking poles, sunscreen, lip balm, and personal medication.
  • Soft duffel bag for porter-carried luggage and dry bags to protect clothing from rain.
