Overview of the Lemosho route

The 6-day Marangu Route is the better-paced version of Kilimanjaro’s classic hut route. It begins and ends at Marangu Gate and uses permanent mountain huts at Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo instead of tent camping.

This 8-day tour includes arrival and departure days, with 6 trekking days on the mountain. Compared with the 5-day version, this itinerary adds an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, making it a stronger option for first-time Kilimanjaro climbers who want the Marangu Route.

Who Should Choose the 6-Day Marangu Trek?

The 6-day Marangu trek is the better choice for most climbers who want hut accommodation on Kilimanjaro. The extra night at Horombo Hut gives the body more time to adjust before moving higher to Kibo Hut and attempting Uhuru Peak.

Guruguru Safaris should recommend this version over the 5-day Marangu option for first-time climbers, families with fit older teenagers, and travelers who want a more comfortable pace without choosing a longer camping route.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport - Transfer to Hotel

On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be welcomed by a Guruguru Safaris representative and transferred to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. The rest of the day is for rest after your flight, gear organization, and preparation before the mountain.

In the evening, your mountain guide will conduct a detailed briefing. The briefing covers the Marangu route plan, altitude safety, daily trekking pace, hut accommodation, packing check, and how the Guruguru Safaris mountain crew will support the expedition.

Day 2

Hotel - Marangu Gate - Mandara Hut

After breakfast, drive to Marangu Gate for Kilimanjaro National Park registration and porter luggage checks. Once permits are complete, begin the trek through the rainforest on a steady, well-defined trail.

This lower section is green, humid, and rich in forest scenery. Rain is possible at any time, so keep a rain jacket and waterproof cover inside your daypack.

Arrive at Mandara Hut in the afternoon. Your Guruguru Safaris crew will organize the hut arrangements, prepare meals, and brief you on the next trekking day.

Day 3

Mandara Hut - Horombo Hut - Short Acclimatization Walk

After breakfast, leave Mandara Hut and continue upward into heath and moorland vegetation. The forest gradually opens and, in clear weather, you may see both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks ahead.

After arrival at Horombo Hut, rest and take lunch. Later, your guide may lead a short acclimatization walk toward the direction of Kibo Hut before descending back to Horombo for dinner.

This first acclimatization walk helps the body begin adapting to the altitude before the full Horombo acclimatization day.

Day 4

Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

Today is dedicated to acclimatization. After breakfast, your guide will lead an acclimatization hike from Horombo toward Zebra Rocks, Mawenzi side, or another suitable high point depending on weather and group condition.

The goal is to climb higher during the day and return to sleep at Horombo Hut. This improves the body’s adjustment before the move to Kibo Hut and the summit attempt.

After returning to Horombo, take lunch, rest, hydrate, and review the plan for the following day. This extra day is the key advantage of the 6-day Marangu itinerary.

Day 5

Horombo Hut - Kibo Hut

After breakfast, trek across the open high-altitude terrain between Mawenzi and Kibo. The vegetation becomes sparse and the landscape feels dry, wide, and exposed as you approach the summit base.

The walking is not technically difficult, but altitude makes the day serious. Your guide will keep the pace slow so that you arrive at Kibo Hut with enough energy for summit night.

At Kibo Hut, eat early, organize your summit clothing, fill water bottles, and rest as much as possible. The summit attempt usually begins around midnight.

Meal Plan

Day 6

Kibo Hut - Uhuru Peak - Horombo Hut

The summit climb starts at night from Kibo Hut. The route rises slowly toward the crater rim, and the cold, darkness, and altitude make this the most demanding part of the Marangu Route.

Your Guruguru Safaris guides will control the pace and monitor each climber closely. After reaching the crater rim, continue toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

After photos and a short celebration, descend back to Kibo for a brief rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut. Careful foot placement is important because most climbers are tired during the descent.

Day 7

Horombo Hut - Marangu Gate - Transfer to Hotel

After breakfast, descend through moorland and rainforest toward Marangu Gate. The air becomes warmer and thicker as you lose altitude, making the final day feel easier than summit day.

At Marangu Gate, complete park exit procedures and receive Kilimanjaro certificates if you reached the summit or crater rim. This is also the time to thank the guides, cook, and porters who supported the climb.

A Guruguru Safaris vehicle will transfer you back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi for a hot shower, rest, and celebration.

Departure - Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport

After breakfast, relax at the hotel until your scheduled airport transfer. Depending on your flight time, you may add a short Arusha or Moshi town visit, coffee experience, souvenir shopping, or an extra hotel day at additional cost.

For travelers continuing their Tanzania adventure, Guruguru Safaris can arrange a private safari to Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti, Lake Manyara, or a beach extension to Zanzibar.

Optional Extensions with Guruguru Safaris

After Kilimanjaro, many travelers add a private Tanzania safari or Zanzibar beach holiday. Popular combinations include a 3-day Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara safari; a Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari; or a Zanzibar beach extension for rest after the mountain.

  • The Marangu Route is known as the Coca-Cola Route and is the classic Kilimanjaro hut route, but it is still a serious high-altitude climb.
  • The route uses mountain huts instead of camping tents, which makes it attractive for climbers who prefer basic indoor accommodation on the mountain.
  • Walk slowly from the first day. A controlled pace is one of the best ways to protect acclimatization.
  • Drink water frequently and tell your guide early if you feel headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue, or breathing difficulty.
  • Pack warm layers for summit night, including thermal base layers, insulated jacket, gloves, warm hat, and headlamp with spare batteries.
  • Consult your doctor before travel if you plan to use altitude medication or if you have any medical condition.
  • The descent after summit is long. Careful foot placement is important when climbers are tired.
  • Waterproof hiking boots that are already broken in before travel.
  • Thermal base layers, fleece layer, insulated jacket, waterproof jacket, and waterproof trousers.
  • Warm gloves, liner gloves, warm hat, sun hat, neck gaiter, and sunglasses.
  • Sleeping bag suitable for cold mountain nights, unless rented through Guruguru Safaris.
  • Headlamp with spare batteries for summit night.
  • Daypack, water bottles or hydration bladder, trekking poles, sunscreen, lip balm, and personal medication.
  • Soft duffel bag for porter-carried luggage and dry bags to protect clothing from rain.
