Overview of the Lemosho route

The Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It approaches the mountain from the western side, crosses the wide Shira Plateau, passes below Lava Tower, and joins the southern circuit toward Barranco, Karanga, Barafu, Uhuru Peak, and Mweka Gate. This itinerary is designed for travelers who want a beautiful route, strong acclimatization, and a steady mountain pace with the support of Guruguru Safaris guides and crew.

Who Should Choose the 7-Day Lemosho Trek?

This version is faster than the  8-day Lemosho options. It is best for climbers who already have good trekking fitness, previous high-altitude experience, and confidence walking long days on uneven mountain terrain.

Because the schedule is compressed, there is less spare time for acclimatization. Guruguru Safaris should position this route carefully: it is scenic and efficient, but it is not the best option for first-time high-altitude trekkers. For beginners, the 7-day or 8-day Lemosho program is usually a safer and more comfortable choice.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport - Transfer to Hotel

On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be welcomed by a Guruguru Safaris representative and transferred to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. The rest of the day is reserved for relaxing after your flight, checking your mountain gear, and preparing your body for the climb.

In the evening, your mountain guide will conduct a full briefing. This session covers the route plan, daily trekking rhythm, safety procedures, packing check, weather expectations, and important altitude advice. Any missing rental equipment can be arranged before departure.

Day 2

Hotel - Londorossi Gate - Shira 1 Camp

After breakfast, your Guruguru Safaris mountain team will meet you at the hotel for a final check before driving toward the western side of Kilimanjaro. The journey to Londorossi Gate takes you through changing rural landscapes and forested mountain foothills.

At the gate, the team completes park registration and permit formalities. You then continue by vehicle toward the higher trailhead before starting a gentle trek across the edge of the Shira Plateau. This first walk is short, allowing your body to begin adjusting to altitude without rushing.

On arrival at Shira 1 Camp, the support crew will have your tents ready. Settle in, drink enough water, and keep the pace slow. The first high-altitude night is important for acclimatization, so your guide will monitor how everyone is feeling.

Day 3

Shira 1 Camp - Shira 2 Camp - Acclimatization Hike

Today you cross more of the Shira Plateau, one of the most open and beautiful sections of the Lemosho Route. The trail is not overly steep, and the views can be wide and clear, with Kilimanjaro rising ahead and Mount Meru visible in the distance when weather allows.

Depending on the group pace and weather, your guide may include a scenic hike around Cathedral Peak before continuing to Shira 2 Camp. This adds variety to the day and gives excellent views across the plateau.

After lunch and rest at Shira 2 Camp, you will complete a short acclimatization walk toward the direction of Lava Tower before returning to camp. This follows the mountain principle of climbing higher and sleeping lower, helping your body adapt before the harder days ahead.

Day 4

Shira 2 Camp - Lava Tower - Barranco Camp

After breakfast, you begin one of the most important acclimatization days of the climb. The trail leads steadily toward Lava Tower, a dramatic volcanic formation at high altitude. This section can feel demanding because of the elevation, but it is highly valuable for acclimatization.

You will spend time near Lava Tower and have lunch in the area before descending toward Barranco Camp. The descent helps the body recover while still benefiting from the altitude exposure earlier in the day.

Barranco Camp is one of the most dramatic camps on Kilimanjaro, located below the famous Barranco Wall. The wall may look steep from camp, but the route follows a manageable hiking path, and your Guruguru Safaris guides will set a safe and patient pace.

Day 5

Barranco Camp - Barranco Wall - Karanga Camp

The day starts early with breakfast before climbing the Barranco Wall. This is one of the most memorable parts of the Lemosho Route. It is not a technical climb, but it requires focus, slow movement, and careful footing in a few short sections.

At the top, you will have time to rest and enjoy views toward Kibo before continuing through a landscape of ridges and valleys. The route to Karanga involves several small ascents and descents, so the day feels more active than the distance suggests.

After reaching Karanga Camp, the afternoon is used for lunch, rest, hydration, and preparation for the higher camp ahead. When conditions are suitable, your guide may lead a short acclimatization walk toward the Barafu direction before returning to camp.

Day 6

Karanga Camp - Barafu Camp

After a warm breakfast, you leave Karanga and continue toward Barafu Camp, the base camp for the final summit attempt. The trail becomes drier and more alpine, with fewer plants and a stronger feeling of entering Kilimanjaro’s high-altitude zone.

On arrival at Barafu, the priority is rest. Your crew will prepare meals and organize the camp while you conserve energy for the night ahead. Your guide will explain the summit schedule, clothing layers, headlamp use, water management, and the slow “pole pole” rhythm needed for the ascent.

You will have an early dinner and try to sleep before the midnight wake-up call. This is the most important rest period of the climb, even if sleep comes lightly at altitude.

Day 7

Barafu Camp - Uhuru Peak - Millennium Camp

Around midnight, you begin the summit push toward Stella Point and Uhuru Peak. The climb is physically and mentally demanding because of cold temperatures, darkness, loose scree, and high altitude. Guruguru Safaris guides will keep the pace slow, check the group regularly, and support each climber step by step.

Reaching Uhuru Peak is the highest moment of the expedition and the official summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. After photos and a short celebration, you descend carefully back toward Barafu Camp for rest and refreshments.

The descent continues to Millennium Camp, where thicker air and lower altitude bring relief after the long summit day. The team will encourage careful footing on the descent, as tired legs can make this section harder than expected.

Day 8

Millennium Camp - Mweka Gate - Transfer to Hotel

After breakfast, you begin your final descent through the rainforest toward Mweka Gate. The air becomes warmer and thicker as you lose altitude, and the trail gradually returns to the lush lower slopes of Kilimanjaro.

At Mweka Gate, the group completes park exit formalities. Successful climbers receive their Kilimanjaro certificates before saying thank you to the mountain crew.

Optional Extensions with Guruguru Safaris

After Kilimanjaro, many travelers add a private Tanzania safari or Zanzibar beach holiday. Popular combinations include a 3-day Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara safari; a Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari; or a Zanzibar beach extension for rest after the mountain.

  • The Marangu Route is known as the Coca-Cola Route and is the classic Kilimanjaro hut route, but it is still a serious high-altitude climb.
  • The route uses mountain huts instead of camping tents, which makes it attractive for climbers who prefer basic indoor accommodation on the mountain.
  • Walk slowly from the first day. A controlled pace is one of the best ways to protect acclimatization.
  • Drink water frequently and tell your guide early if you feel headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue, or breathing difficulty.
  • Pack warm layers for summit night, including thermal base layers, insulated jacket, gloves, warm hat, and headlamp with spare batteries.
  • Consult your doctor before travel if you plan to use altitude medication or if you have any medical condition.
  • The descent after summit is long. Careful foot placement is important when climbers are tired.
  • Waterproof hiking boots that are already broken in before travel.
  • Thermal base layers, fleece layer, insulated jacket, waterproof jacket, and waterproof trousers.
  • Warm gloves, liner gloves, warm hat, sun hat, neck gaiter, and sunglasses.
  • Sleeping bag suitable for cold mountain nights, unless rented through Guruguru Safaris.
  • Headlamp with spare batteries for summit night.
  • Daypack, water bottles or hydration bladder, trekking poles, sunscreen, lip balm, and personal medication.
  • Soft duffel bag for porter-carried luggage and dry bags to protect clothing from rain.
