Overview of the Lemosho route

The 6-day Rongai Route is a quieter Kilimanjaro climb that begins on the northern side of the mountain near Nalemuru Gate and descends by the Marangu route. It offers a more private mountain atmosphere than the busier southern routes, with views of Mawenzi, Kibo, open moorland, and the dry northern slopes of Kilimanjaro.

This 8-day tour includes arrival and departure days, with 6 trekking days on the mountain. Guruguru Safaris should present this version as a faster Rongai climb for fit travelers, repeat trekkers, or climbers who already have some high-altitude experience.

Who Should Choose the 6-Day Rongai Trek?

The 6-day Rongai trek is best for strong hikers and travelers who want a quiet Kilimanjaro route but have limited time. It is more demanding than the 7-day version because it moves from Simba Camp directly toward Kikilewa Camp and gives the body less time to adjust before reaching Mawenzi Tarn and Kibo Hut.

For most first-time Kilimanjaro climbers, Guruguru Safaris should recommend the 7-day Rongai route instead because it gives a better acclimatization profile and a more comfortable pace before summit night.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport - Transfer to Hotel

On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be welcomed by a Guruguru Safaris representative and transferred to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. The rest of the day is for rest after your flight, gear organization, and preparation before the mountain.

In the evening, your mountain guide will conduct a detailed briefing. The briefing covers the Rongai route plan, altitude safety, daily trekking pace, packing check, weather expectations, and how the Guruguru Safaris mountain crew will support the expedition.

Day 2

Hotel - Nalemuru Gate - Simba Camp

After breakfast, drive to the northern side of Kilimanjaro and arrive at Nalemuru Gate, sometimes called Rongai Gate. Your guide will handle park registration, permits, and porter luggage checks before the trek begins.

The first walking section follows a steady trail through forest and open northern slopes. The route is usually quieter than the southern trails, giving the first day a calm and natural mountain feeling.

You arrive at Simba Camp in the afternoon. Your Guruguru Safaris crew will prepare tents, drinking water, and dinner while the guide checks how each climber is adjusting to the first night on the mountain.

Day 3

Mandara Hut - Horombo Hut - Short Acclimatization Walk

After breakfast, continue across moorland terrain toward Kikilewa Camp. The trail gradually becomes more open, with clearer views toward Kibo and Mawenzi when the weather is good.

This is a longer and more demanding day than the first trekking day. Your guide will keep the pace slow and steady, allowing regular water breaks and checking for any early signs of altitude discomfort.

Kikilewa Camp is set in a quiet mountain environment below the jagged shape of Mawenzi. After arrival, rest, hydrate, and prepare for the move toward higher altitude on the following day.

Day 4

Kikilewa Camp - Mawenzi Tarn Camp - Acclimatization Hike

The trail climbs toward Mawenzi Tarn Camp, one of the most dramatic camps on the Rongai Route. The setting near Mawenzi gives the day a strong alpine feeling, with rugged volcanic scenery and open high-altitude landscapes.

After lunch and rest at camp, your guide may lead a short acclimatization hike above Mawenzi Tarn before descending back to camp for dinner. This follows the climb-high, sleep-low principle and helps the body prepare for Kibo Hut.

At this altitude, communication with your guide matters. Headache, nausea, unusual fatigue, or dizziness should be reported early so the team can respond properly.

Day 5

Mawenzi Tarn Camp - Kibo Hut Camp

After breakfast, cross the high saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The terrain becomes dry, open, and rocky, with a strong high-mountain atmosphere as you move closer to the summit base.

Although the walking is not technically difficult, the altitude makes this day serious. The goal is to arrive at Kibo Hut calmly, eat early, organize summit clothing, and rest as much as possible before the midnight ascent.

Your guide will explain the summit plan in detail, including clothing layers, water, snacks, headlamp use, walking pace, and safety checks during the night climb.

Day 6

Kibo Hut - Uhuru Peak - Horombo Camp

The summit attempt begins around midnight. The climb toward the crater rim is slow, cold, and mentally demanding, but your Guruguru Safaris guides will control the pace and monitor each climber closely.

After reaching the crater rim, continue toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Photos and celebration at the summit are brief because the body must descend to safer altitude as soon as possible.

Descend back toward Kibo for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Camp. This is a very long day, and careful foot placement is important because fatigue is high during the descent.

Day 7

Horombo Camp - Marangu Gate - Transfer to Hotel

After breakfast, descend through the greener lower slopes of Kilimanjaro toward Marangu Gate. The air becomes warmer and thicker as you lose altitude, making the final walking day feel easier than summit day.

At Marangu Gate, complete park exit formalities and receive Kilimanjaro certificates if you reached the summit or crater rim. This is also the moment to thank the guides, cook, and porters who supported the climb.

A Guruguru Safaris vehicle will transfer you back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi for a hot shower, rest, and celebration.

After breakfast, relax at the hotel until your scheduled airport transfer. Depending on your flight time, you may add a short Arusha or Moshi town visit, coffee experience, souvenir shopping, or an extra hotel day at additional cost.

For travelers continuing their Tanzania adventure, Guruguru Safaris can arrange a private safari to Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti, Lake Manyara, or a beach extension to Zanzibar.

Optional Extensions with Guruguru Safaris

After Kilimanjaro, many travelers add a private Tanzania safari or Zanzibar beach holiday. Popular combinations include a 3-day Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara safari; a Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari; or a Zanzibar beach extension for rest after the mountain.

  • The Marangu Route is known as the Coca-Cola Route and is the classic Kilimanjaro hut route, but it is still a serious high-altitude climb.
  • The route uses mountain huts instead of camping tents, which makes it attractive for climbers who prefer basic indoor accommodation on the mountain.
  • Walk slowly from the first day. A controlled pace is one of the best ways to protect acclimatization.
  • Drink water frequently and tell your guide early if you feel headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue, or breathing difficulty.
  • Pack warm layers for summit night, including thermal base layers, insulated jacket, gloves, warm hat, and headlamp with spare batteries.
  • Consult your doctor before travel if you plan to use altitude medication or if you have any medical condition.
  • The descent after summit is long. Careful foot placement is important when climbers are tired.
  • Waterproof hiking boots that are already broken in before travel.
  • Thermal base layers, fleece layer, insulated jacket, waterproof jacket, and waterproof trousers.
  • Warm gloves, liner gloves, warm hat, sun hat, neck gaiter, and sunglasses.
  • Sleeping bag suitable for cold mountain nights, unless rented through Guruguru Safaris.
  • Headlamp with spare batteries for summit night.
  • Daypack, water bottles or hydration bladder, trekking poles, sunscreen, lip balm, and personal medication.
  • Soft duffel bag for porter-carried luggage and dry bags to protect clothing from rain.
